... part of the solution
You are either part of the problem, part of the solution, or part of the landscape, or so the great movie line goes. Together, with vision, courage, and plain old-fashioned elbow grease, we can be part of the solution for all of the difficult circumstances we face today and bring meaningful and promising changes for the legacy we leave to our tomorrows.
Our laws are so much more than just a set of words written in stone, they are a mirror image of our society‚Äö value system, and as such always should be reflective of where we are and where we need to go as a State. Our laws must respond to our changing needs as a community and be able to serve as answers, not roadblocks, to difficult situations.
As the People's Lawyer, my job is to keep moving in the direction of progress, to protect our interests and our quality of life as Rhode Islanders. This means that while I am responsible for aggressively enforcing the laws of the State, as they are written, I am also responsible for promoting change in the laws that are not working, and making sure that a constant discussion of change is taking place in Rhode Island.
Every day my office is faced with challenging issues and cases. To me, every case we handle is, and, has to be, the most important case we handle. To individual Rhode Islanders, Rhode Island families, our neighborhoods, and our State -- our response to a whole range of legal issues means everything. I never lose sight of that most fundamental fact. Whether we are enforcing the state drinking and driving laws to keep our roads and our children safe; alerting the public to consumer scams involving identity theft; making healthcare more accessible; blocking LNG terminals from our backyard, defending laws that reduce the effects of global warming; promoting energy efficiency; or prosecuting people charged with violent crimes we are driven toward finding solutions that will move us toward justice and progress.
That is why we are committed to excellence in reviewing every issue, concern, or case that you bring to our door. That is why the Office of the Attorney General will work with you so that we can continue to be an agent of change here in Rhode Island, and, together, always be part of the solution.
Civil Rights
In 2002 candidate for Attorney General, Lynch pledged to create within the office of Attorney General a Civil Rights Advocate to promote civil rights and prosecute hate crimes throughout the state. I created this postion because we need to protect and champion the civil rights of all Rhode Islanders." Lynch said. We are all free to have our own opinions and beliefs. We are not free, however, to deny the benefits of civil law to those whom we may not like."... Read More
